Got Giants?

Why do we so easily forget the good and dwell on the bad? Why do we let a crisis derail us in our relationship with God? Why do we let the giants of our lives impact us? Tracie Miles wrote in Stress-Less Living: Finding God’s Peace in Your Chaotic World, “Giants are big. Giants are ugly. Giants are scary. But in God’s eyes, all giants are beatable. Because God is bigger.

Recently, I let a crisis in our family derail me for a little while, however, during the time I felt derailed I continued to read Tracie’s book and my bible. I reached out to my leader in our on-line group with specifics and in general with the on-line group. I could feel all the prayers. My heart was still hurting last week so I didn’t write except prayers in my journal.

The verse helped me this week fight the giants of fear, self doubt, discouragement.  Finally, sisters– Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable– if anything is excellent or praise worthy think about such things. Philippians 4: 8

For one to think on whatever  is true, one needs to know the truth and to not fall prey to Satan’s lies.  Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. John 14:6.  I have often fallen prey to the lies of the devil. In 1 Peter 5:8, Be sober minded: be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. Some of the lies I have believed are you are not worthwhile, you are so fat, no one loves you, you are living a lie, you are not strong in your faith and you will never get your relationship with God right. The note on from the Ryrie ESV Study Bible on 1 Peter 5: 8 says Satan wants to completely drown or swallow up your testimony. When we believe the lie our testimony is swallowed up. The truth is I am losing weight actually close to goal weight, I am loved by God, I am strong in my faith, I am God’s child. I am Christ’s friend. I have been justified.  To know the truth and recognize lies one must read God’s word. I make an appointment with God one day in advance to read from my Change Your Life Bible and I journal my prayers. I read books that challenge me like Stress-less Living. I just started writing God’s verses on index cards to do the verse mapping and then I write the verse again and I give them away daily to some one who needs encouragement.

For one to think on whatever is noble, we need to know who we are in Christ. Matthew 5: 13-14 we are the salt and light of the earth.  John 15: 1, 5  we are a branch of the true vine, a channel of Him. John 15: 16 we have been chosen and appointed to bear fruit. 1 Corinthians 3:16 we are a temple of the Holy Spirit.

For one to think on whatever is right, one has to renounce the wrong thinking I call it “stink’in thinkin”  and  announce the truth.  For those of us who have Christ as our savior we are secure because of his death on the cross, his resurrection, the gift of eternal life. Romans 8:1-2 we are free from condemnation. Romans 8:28 we are assured that all things work together for good. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 we are established, anointed, sealed by God.

For one to think on whatever is pure, let our thoughts be transformed by the renewing of our mind. God is pure, He is holy. In 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 we are bought with a price, we belong to God. Ephesians 1:1 We are saints. Ephesians 1:5 we have been adopted as God’s child.

For one to think on whatever is lovely, one needs to renounce the thoughts that are defeating. In Hebrews 4:16 I can find grace and mercy in time of need. I John 5:18 I am born of God; the evil one cannot touch me. Ephesians 3:12 I may approach God with freedom and confidence.

For one to think on whatever is admirable, one needs to think on God’s word. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.  Philippians 1: 6 I am confident that the good work he began in me will be perfected. 2 Timothy 1:7 I have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.

If anything is excellent or praise worthy think about such things. Colossians 2:10 I am complete in Christ. Galatians 5:1a For freedom Christ has set us free. Romans 12:9 Let love be genuine, Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Galatians 5:1b Stand firm therefore, do not submit to a yoke of slavery.  Tracie said in her book, “we can have troubles and still be in God’s favor, as we allow him be our strength.’

Father God, use this crisis in my family’s life for your glory. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the time off I have had and the rest I have had this week. Slay my giants: fear, worry and discouragement. Use me Lord to encourage others that need to find freedom in you. Thank you for this on line study, for Tracie, and for all of the leaders and the ladies studying your word together.

  1. I have one huge giant to face. It is eating disorder. I eat when I have a still small voice telling me I don’t need or even want that food. I have another still small voice telling me to go ahead I already blew it today anyway. So guess which one wins. The one that gives me the most pleasure but the most regrets. Yep. I listen to the one telling me it is ok. I just did this not ten minutes ago when putting dinner leftovers away. Geez. I lost over seventy pounds a couple yrs ago and just recently put over twenty back on. This time I lose it I pray I never find it again hope I don’t go looking for it. I covet your prayers for overcoming this giant in my life. One that is doable.
